Country Music Culture

Nashville's roots run deep in country and southern music. It's the home of the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium and other famous venues where country stars are discovered and rediscovered. There are also dozens of other popular music scenes throughout the city, including Americana, bluegrass, folk and gospel.

The Athens of the South

During the late 1800s, Nashville became a major cultural center. The city hosted the Tennessee Centennial Exposition, which drew thousands of visitors to Nashville from around the world. It was also home to a large number of universities and colleges, including Vanderbilt University, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Tech University.

The Parthenon

One of the city's most iconic landmarks is a full-scale replica of the ancient Greek temple that drew visitors to Nashville during the 1897 Centennial Exposition. The Parthenon is an important tourist attraction and has undergone many updates over the years, including a revamp of the surrounding Centennial Park.

It's also the only fully-scaled replica of the original Parthenon in existence, which is why it's so popular! You can walk around the structure and check out the Athena statue, or you can visit the lower level of the building where you can learn more about the Greek culture that made it so popular in the first place.

A Great Outdoors Adventure

No trip to Nashville would be complete without a visit to Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, a 165-acre natural area that features hiking trails and other outdoor activities. It's a popular place to picnic, but it's also a great place to watch the sunset over the Cumberland River. The gazebo on the riverfront is a popular spot for sunset viewing, and it's one of the best places to enjoy a sunset view in Tennessee.

The city's proximity to the Appalachian Mountains makes it a great location for hunting and fishing. There are numerous outfitters, guides and other resources in the area to help you find what you're looking for.

You can also take advantage of the city's astronomy resources, which include the Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory. This large white dome is one of the largest in Tennessee and has a huge astronomy center with telescopes and tours available for the public.

If you're a fan of Hindu culture, the Sri Ganesha Temple is a must-see. You can walk around the grounds and take in the sights, listen to chants and learn more about Hinduism. There's also a cafeteria and tours so you can get a sense of what it's like to practice this ancient religion in the heart of Nashville.

Another must-see is the Nashville Farmer's Market, which is held on the third Saturday of every month. This is an annual event that has been in existence for over 30 years. It's a great place to sample local foods, meet farmers and artisans and see what's fresh in the area.
